Yes, you’re single. Yes, you’re alone. Yes, we know. Yes, we re- keep the goddamn razor blades away. Jesus Fucking Christ, woman. No, you are not pathetic. Wait, I lied. You are pretty fucking pathetic if you think about slitting your wrists just because your stupid facebook status says ‘Single’. But so fucking what if you are single and flitting through life alone? That’s not pathetic and fuck anyone who tells you otherwise, damnit. No, you are not sad. No, you are not a poor schmuck. No, you are not a loser.

Believe it or not, you actually happen to be one of millions of us who lead productive and meaningful lives, sexless, loveless and content. I shit you not.

And let me tell you that life without sex and love or love and sex, depending on your priorities, is worth living. It doesn’t make us any less human than those of you lucky enough to fall in love and stay in love. It doesn’t make us any less beautiful than you, any less whole than you, any less happier than you. It doesn’t make us any less functional than you. It just means that we haven’t met the right person or haven’t grown up or are just too blind to recognise what’s in front of us. It may just mean we aren’t ready for this great adventure love is going to spiral us into. It may even mean that some of us have dreams and aspirations and ambitions to that we deem more important than love and/or getting laid to fulfil. But I do agree that a life with love and sex or sex and love is worth more, so much more.  But until that moment presents itself to us and until that soulmate wanders into our lives, why whine and mope and sulk and cast love spells and brew love potion No. 9 in our basements and bitch over coffee how person A is with person B and not with you?

There’s nothing wrong with writing great love stories and singing about the sweet plunge into a whirlwind of pheromones and lovebites and cuddles and terms of endearment. I do that, even if only to remember how happy I felt when I was in love, all the time. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to fall in love with someone who knows who you are, in and out, good and bad, ugly and beautiful, asleep and awake, and still loves you until you’re old and gnarly and on your deathbed, whispering ‘I love you’ with your last breath and there’s nothing wrong with picturing poignant love scenes and heartbreaking declarations of love. But there’s also nothing wrong with going through life alone and taking that time to find yourself and do what makes you happy and live on your terms and answer to no one but yourself.

I think what I’m trying to say is shut the fuck up about being alone and single. It’s not a terminal illness and it’s not fatal or deadly or poisonous. Stop scheming and plotting so you can trap some poor unsuspecting fella into being your armcandy so you won’t feel pathetic when you’re out with your girlfriends. And please stop asking me what’s wrong with you and why no one wants to be with you. You know why.

Don’t let the need for love consume you. It will ruin you.
